Art Nouveau Designers at the Paris Salons, 1895-1914 by Alastair Duncan,
The fabric designers of the art nouveau style who exhibited at the Paris Salons produced a remarkable oeuvre in printed and woven fabric, silk, lace, embroidery and tapestry. Bookbinding was, and still is, a well-established French tradition, and bibliophiles commissioned unique bindings from artist-designers who, at the same time, were also creating and exhibiting non-bound leather goods -- handbags, blotters, upholstery. The catalogues of the Paris Salons provide a unique archive of illustrations of the decorative arts at a pivotal time in their development, the five previous volumes covering Jewellery, Furniture, Ceramics and Glass, and Objets d'Art. This volume is historically the most important in the series. Because of wear and tear, practically none of the 1,200 or so textile and leatherware pieces illustrated have survived outside museum collections or appear at auction, unlike many of the items covered by the earlier volumes.

Leather painting - Leather painting differs from leather dying in that paint remains only on the surface while dyes are absorbed into the leather. Due to this difference, leather painting techniques can not be used on items that can or must bend nor on items that receive friction.

Artificial leather - Under the name of artificial leather, or of American leather cloth, large quantities of a material having, more or less, a leather-like surface were once used, principally for upholstery purposes, such as the covering of chairs, lining the tops of writing desks and tables, &c. There was considerable diversity in the preparation of such materials.

DK Leather - DK Leather established in 1997 as a leather trading house, is the largest automotive leather upholstery manufacturer for the secondary market in the world. It launched their own brand - "DK Schweizer" in 2001 and set up a plant in the Netherlands in 2003.

Leather carving - Leather carving entails using metal implements to compress moistened leather in such a way as to give a three dimensional appearance to a two dimensional surface. The surface of the leather is not intended to be cut through at all, such work being known as filigree.
